Harlan Wright was hospitalized, and Joshua John Thompson was arrested after the alleged assault was reported to deputies.

A man gathering signatures for the long-running Recall Kate Brown campaign was assaulted in Happy Valley on Saturday, Aug. 22, according to police and media reports.

Harlan Wright told Pamplin Media Group news partner KOIN 6 he was gathering signatures at a booth set up near Highway 212 at Southeast 152nd Avenue around 2 p.m. when a man grew upset at a female petitioner and Wright intervened.

He was taken to a local hospital for treatment after the alleged attack. According to KPTV, Wright’s nose and at least one rib were broken.

Joshua John Thompson, 39, of Damascus, was arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault and second-degree disorderly conduct. He was previously arrested for aggravated assault in 2015 and first-degree burglary in 2010, among other charges, per court records. He is currently being held on $40,000 bail.

CCSO – Joshua Thompson“This is the type of vicious assault that our extreme left mass media outlets fail to cover, even as they falsely blame the right wing for most political violence in America,” Multnomah County Republican Party Chair James Buchal said in a statement to Pamplin Media.

“It is only a matter of time before someone gets killed in Oregon by political opponents,” said Buchal, “and our feckless leaders will share the blame.”

GoFundMe has been set up to cover Wright’s medical expenses.
